Select your vehicle to load the fuse box diagram.

3 Easy Steps

Find the Fuse Box

The main engine fuse box is located inside the engine bay either on the left or right side. It usually has an icon of a fuse or lightning bolt on top of it. A few clips and the cover should pop right off.

Locate the Starter Relay

Use the fuse box diagram shown above to locate the starter relay. You can also look at the diagram on the back of the fuse box cover or at your owners manual to find the same diagram.

Swap in Defender

Simply unplug the factory starter relay and swap your Defender system in its place. After doing so try starting the vehicle with and without pressing the button on the fob to ensure it works.

How the Key Fobs Work

Starting Your Vehicle

Defender automatically arms after the engine shuts off and your engine won't start again unless the button on the key fob is pressed. After pressing the button you have approx. 30 seconds to start the engine before Defender re-arms itself.

Manual vs. Automatic Mode

The fobs can be set to one of two modes: manual (recommended) or automatic. In manual mode the button needs to be pressed before the engine is started. In automatic mode, the engine will start if the key is within ~30 feet and movement is detected.

Changing Modes

To switch modes, press and hold the fob button for 5 seconds until the LED turns off, release, then press the button twice. The LED will blink 5 times to indicate automatic mode and 2 times for manual mode.

Battery Replacement

When the LED flashes red, the batteries need to be replaced. If power gets too low Defender will automatically disarm as a safety precaution. Remove the three screws on the back of the fob and replace with two CR2032 batteries.

Auto Start Stop & Remote Start

Auto Start/Stop

Defender does not work with vehicles that have auto start/stop unless this function has been disabled. Simply purchase and install a start/stop disabler to ensure compatibility with Defender.

Remote Start

Defender is fully compatible with remote start, but the key fob button must be pressed before trying to remote start the vehicle and it must also be within approx. 30 feet of the vehicle to work.
